Terms of Service

Summary

These terms cover your use of the Plain Markdown browser extension and the optional paid plans. The free extension runs in your browser and converts pages locally. Pro is an annual subscription that raises the monthly AI actions limit. BYOK is a one-time lifetime license that lets you run AI actions with your own provider key. By using the extension or buying a plan, you agree to these terms.

What you get

Plain Markdown is a Chrome extension that converts webpages into clean Markdown. Conversion runs locally on your device and is free.

Pro is an optional annual subscription that raises the AI actions cap to 3,000 per month (with a 200/day ceiling) and adds priority email support. Pro is delivered as a license key emailed at checkout; no account or login is required. Your license is personal and may not be resold, shared, or transferred.

BYOK ("Bring Your Own Key") is an optional one-time lifetime license that lets the extension run AI actions through your own OpenRouter API key. You choose the model; AI usage is billed by OpenRouter, not by us. BYOK is delivered as a license key emailed at checkout; no account or login is required. Your license is personal and may not be resold, shared, or transferred.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Plain Markdown to generate or distribute content that is illegal or infringes someone else's rights.
  • Resell, sublicense, or share access to the AI service or your Pro license key.
  • Probe the service for security vulnerabilities, attempt to access private networks, or interfere with normal operation.
  • Automate AI actions to circumvent quotas or run them at a volume beyond ordinary personal use.

We may suspend or revoke access for clear breaches, such as license-key resale or sharing. Where reasonable, we will let you know what the issue is and give you a chance to fix it first.

Pro plan and billing

Pro is $29 per year, processed by Stripe. Displayed prices are tax-inclusive where applicable. Subscriptions renew annually at the then-current price until you cancel.

To cancel, email support@plainmarkdown.com or use the billing portal link in your purchase email. Cancellation stops the next renewal; you keep access through the end of the current period.

BYOK plan and billing

BYOK is a one-time payment of $19, processed by Stripe. Displayed prices are tax-inclusive where applicable. The license does not expire and does not renew. AI usage on BYOK is billed directly by OpenRouter under your own account; we do not see or invoice that usage.

AI actions

AI actions send the page content you select to an AI model and return the generated output to you. On Pro, requests are processed through our managed AI infrastructure using Google Gemini models. On BYOK, requests go directly from your browser to OpenRouter using the API key you provide, and you choose the model. Output is produced automatically, may be inaccurate or incomplete, and is not a substitute for your own judgment or professional advice. Verify anything important before relying on it.

Privacy and destinations

How we handle your data is described in our Privacy Policy. When you connect an external service as a destination (Obsidian, Readwise, Notion), captured Markdown is sent directly from your browser to that service, which operates under its own terms and privacy policy.

Disclaimers and liability

Plain Markdown is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose, and we may change or discontinue features over time.

If we permanently discontinue Plain Markdown, we will give reasonable notice and refund the unused portion of any active Pro subscription on a pro-rata basis.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim related to Plain Markdown is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

Changes

If we change these terms in a way that affects you, we will notify Pro customers by email. The date above reflects the most recent change. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Croatia. Nothing in these terms affects mandatory consumer protections that apply to you under the laws of your country of residence, including the EU and UK 14-day right to withdraw from a purchase.
