Privacy Policy

Summary

Plain Markdown offers a free browser extension that converts pages locally with no data collection, and an optional Premium license that unlocks AI actions running on an AI provider key you supply. The data flows are described below.

Browser extension

Page conversion runs locally in your browser using our extraction engine. Drafts and settings are stored only in your browser, never on our servers. The extension performs no analytics and sets no cookies. Activating a license key sends a random device identifier so one key can only be used on a limited number of devices; see License keys below.

If you enable multi-tab capture, the extension reads your open tabs' titles and URLs so you can choose which to convert; that list stays in your browser, and the selected pages are converted locally like any single page.

When you use an AI action, the page content you choose is sent directly from your browser to the AI provider whose API key you supplied, such as OpenRouter or OpenAI. It is not routed through our servers and we never see it. That provider's privacy policy applies to the processing.

Destinations

When you connect an external service as a destination and use "Send to," the captured Markdown is sent directly from your browser to that service. The content does not pass through our servers. Any tokens or OAuth credentials you authorize are stored safely in your browser.

Some destinations use OAuth. In those cases the one-time authorization code is exchanged on our server so that our integration credentials never ship inside the extension. We do not access your account beyond what you explicitly grant during the consent step.

Payments

Stripe handles all payment processing. We store your Stripe customer and payment identifiers so we can find your purchase if you need help with your key, but never your card details. See Stripe's privacy policy.

License keys

Your license key is delivered to you by email when you purchase. We store it securely on our servers, never in plain text. The email address you used at checkout is kept alongside the license so we can help you recover your key if you lose it.

When you activate a key, the extension sends a random device identifier with the validation request. We keep one record per device (the identifier plus first and last seen dates) to limit how many devices use a single license. These records contain no browsing data and are deleted when you get a fresh key.

Free trial

Starting a Premium trial sends your email address to our server, where we store it with the start date. We use this to send a single reminder email before the trial ends, to keep one trial per email address, and to record whether a trial led to a purchase. Starting a trial does not subscribe you to anything; the reminder is the only email we send.

Third parties

We use a small set of trusted vendors to run the service:

• Stripe: payment processing
• Email service provider: license key delivery, recovery, and the trial reminder
• Your AI provider: receives page content directly from your browser when you run an AI action, under the key and account you supply

Destinations you choose to connect (such as note-taking or read-later services) receive content directly from your browser and operate under their own privacy policies.

Data retention

We keep license and billing records for as long as needed to provide the service and to meet legal and accounting obligations. Device activation records are removed when you reset your key. Trial records are kept so that one trial per email address stays enforceable.
